Aiyoeweng Sea of Mist Viewpoint and Skywalk Aiyoeweng

Khao Microwave — named for the telephone relay towers still standing on its summit — rises 621 metres above Betong, Thailand’s southernmost town, and on clear mornings the valleys on both its east and west sides fill with cloud below the ridgeline. It’s cool enough at the top to want a light jacket, a rarity this close to the equator, and the payoff for the early start is a sea of mist spread out in both directions rather than the single view most Thai viewpoints offer.
Three viewpoints sit along the summit road. The Skywalk itself — Viewpoint 1 — is a six-storey, 45-metre steel tower reached by a 500-metre concrete path from the car park (motorcycle taxis run the route for those who’d rather not walk it before sunrise). A cantilevered corridor extends from the building to a glass floor at the end, giving a straight-down view of the drop. It’s the only one of the three that charges admission. Viewpoint 2, the original mist-viewing spot near the transmission towers, is a free two-storey concrete balcony with a path down to an open ridge. Viewpoint 3 sits about a kilometre further down the access road at a lower elevation, with its own car park, a long observation deck strung along the ridge, and a handful of small restaurants — the only food options on the mountain.
- Skywalk entry: 200 THB (foreigners), 40 THB (Thai nationals); free under 18 and 60+
- Hours: Daily, roughly 05:30-16:30
- Best time: Arrive by 06:00 for the sea of mist, before it burns off
- Extras: Disposable socks (~30 THB, required on the glass) and shuttle rides (20-30 THB each way)
- Free alternative: Viewpoints 2 and 3 don’t charge admission
Insider Tip: Bring a warm layer — Betong sits at altitude and pre-dawn temperatures on the summit can drop into the low teens Celsius, cold enough to catch visitors in shorts and t-shirts off guard.
Safety Tip: Betong and the Aiyoeweng skywalk lie well inside Thailand’s southern tip and see steady tourist traffic distinct from the border districts where travel advisories apply further north; ordinary precautions are all that’s needed here, but check current government travel advice before planning a wider Deep South itinerary.
The skywalk sits around 25-30 km from Betong town, reachable by rented car, motorbike or a hired driver — there’s no scheduled public transport this far up the mountain. Combine the visit with the Betong hot spring or the wartime Piyamit Tunnel on the same day, both a short drive back toward town.
