Bua Tong Field, Doi Mae U Kho

Doi Mae U Kho, in Khun Yuam district of Mae Hong Son province, turns into a hillside of wild Bua Tong (Mexican sunflower) blooms for roughly a month each year — peaking mid-November to early December. Entry is free, the fields sit at about 1,600 metres elevation, and outside that narrow bloom window there’s little reason to make the trip: this is a seasonal spectacle, not a year-round garden.

When the flowers are out, they cover more than 500 rai (about 80 hectares) of mountainside in yellow, with viewing pavilions built along the ridgelines for the classic wide shot of the whole valley in bloom. Local authorities mark the start of the season with an official opening around 11 November, with cultural performances and OTOP stalls at the parking area for the first weekend or two. Trails wind through the flowers themselves rather than skirting the edges, so you can walk in among stems that reach well above head height in a good year — bring a jacket regardless of the time of day, since the elevation keeps mornings noticeably colder than lowland Thailand.

Insider Tip: Go early. The flowers face the morning sun and the valley mist tends to clear by mid-morning, so the best light and the clearest views both happen before 9am, well ahead of the day-trip crowds from Mae Hong Son and Chiang Mai.

Watch out: outside the bloom window this is just a green mountainside — check current bloom reports before committing to the drive, since the exact start and end shift year to year with rainfall.

The mountain road in from Khun Yuam is winding but paved; a private car or motorbike is the standard way up, and some visitors arrange a shared songthaew from Khun Yuam town instead of driving themselves. Combine the trip with Pha Bong Hot Springs on the way back toward Mae Hong Son town, or with Su Tong Pae Bridge if you’re spending a full day in the province.
