Phabong Dam is a hydroelectric facility on the Mae Lamat stream, about 12km south of Mae Hong Son town on Highway 108, near kilometre marker 337. It isn’t a swimming or boating spot — this is a roadside viewpoint over an EGAT reservoir, built where the stream cuts through a natural gorge in the hills. A wide plaza with a rest pavilion overlooks the dam and its spillway; on a clear morning the mist rising off the water against the forested ridgeline is the main draw.

The dam exists because Mae Hong Son’s mountainous terrain makes it impractical to run high-voltage transmission lines in from the national grid, and the town used to see frequent outages as a result. The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand built the Pha Bong hydro plant here alongside a solar farm and a diesel backup plant as part of a local “smart grid” pilot, and more recently added a small education and recreation centre on site with electric bikes, EV buses and renewable-energy demonstrations open to visitors.

Around the viewpoint, a handful of hill-tribe-style coffee shops and a souvenir stand have grown up to serve passing traffic on the 108 — locals stop here as much for the coffee and the photo backdrop as for the dam itself. Picnic tables sit under the pavilion roof, and camping is allowed with advance approval from the provincial electricity office, though most visitors treat this as a 20–30 minute stop rather than a destination in its own right.

Insider Tip: Combine the visit with Pha Bong Hot Springs, a separate site nearby in the same subdistrict — same general area, different attraction, easy to fold into one loop south of town.

Watch out: There’s no ticket gate or fixed opening hours — it’s an open highway viewpoint, so visibility depends entirely on daylight and weather. Early morning brings the best mist and the least traffic noise off Highway 108.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you swim at Phabong Dam?
No — it's a working EGAT hydroelectric reservoir, not a swimming spot. The appeal is the viewpoint and rest pavilion overlooking the dam and the gorge behind it, not the water itself.
Is Phabong Dam the same place as Pha Bong Hot Springs?
No. They sit in the same Pha Bong subdistrict but are separate sites a few kilometres apart — the dam is a reservoir and roadside viewpoint, the hot springs are natural thermal pools with a different set of coordinates and a different TAT listing.
Is there an entry fee?
No, the viewpoint and pavilion are free with no ticket gate.
How do you get to Phabong Dam?
It's about 12km south of Mae Hong Son town on Highway 108, near kilometre marker 337. You'll need your own transport — no scheduled songthaew runs directly there.
What is the EGAT centre next to the dam?
A small education and recreation site built alongside the reservoir, with electric bikes, EV buses and renewable-energy demonstrations tied to the hydro-solar-diesel "smart grid" project that supplies power to Mae Hong Son town.
