Buaban Forest Park
วนอุทยานบัวบาน
Buaban Forest Park protects around 2,000 rai (320 hectares) of dry dipterocarp and mixed deciduous forest on the edge of Nong Bua Lam Phu town, built around a run of sandstone cliffs rather than a single headline peak. It’s a forest park (วนอุทยาน) under the Department of National Parks — a lighter designation than a national park — established by department order in 2006. Entry is free, and it’s open daily from 08:00 to 20:30.
The park’s high ground is a series of named cliffs — Pha Lan Chorakhe Khu, Pha Phueng, Pha Pluem Kamon, Pha Kep Tawan, Pha Chong Lom, and the tallest and most visited, Pha Chom Mueang, which looks straight out over Nong Bua Lam Phu town below. Beyond the cliffs there’s a small waterfall stream, a cave holding Buddha images (locally called Tham Phra), and a cluster of weathered rock outcrops known as the old-town rocks. Trails link the features together through open, savanna-like patches of grassland broken up by denser stands of forest — typical of the region’s tropical dry-forest ecosystems.
Insider Tip: Time a visit for late afternoon rather than midday — Pha Chom Mueang faces the town, so the light softens and the heat drops off in the couple of hours before the park’s 20:30 close, without needing an early-morning start.
Cool season (November-February) gives the most comfortable walking conditions; the dry-forest canopy offers limited shade and the sandstone gets hot underfoot by midday in the hot season. Watch out: facilities are minimal — there’s no restaurant or shop inside the park, so bring your own water and snacks. Sturdy shoes help on the rock sections around the cliffs, which can be uneven and occasionally slick after rain.
