Chai Nat Muni National Museum
พิพิธภัณฑสถานแห่งชาติ ชัยนาทมุนี
Chai Nat Muni National Museum is a compact provincial collection beside Wat Thammamun, built around finds dug up along the Chao Phraya River and the history of Chainat as a river crossing between the central plains and the old Ayutthaya kingdom. Foreign admission is 80 THB (10 THB for Thai nationals), and the museum opens Wednesday to Sunday, closed Monday, Tuesday and public holidays.
The strongest part of the collection is its amulets and votive tablets — rows of small clay and metal tablets recovered from local temple crypts, alongside Buddha images worked in the U Thong and Ayutthaya styles. Cases of prehistoric tools and pottery trace settlement along the river back further still, and a smaller section covers the everyday: farming tools and craft objects used by river communities here for generations. None of it is flashy, but it fills in a period of central Thai history that the country’s marquee temples skip over.
The galleries are air-conditioned and usually quiet outside school-group visits, which tend to land mid-morning on weekdays. It is a small museum — plan an hour to ninety minutes rather than a half-day — and a useful midday stop when Chainat’s heat makes outdoor sightseeing unpleasant.
Insider Tip: Go right after the Wednesday or Thursday opening, before any school groups arrive — the amulet cases get busy once a tour group is crowded around them.
