Chalerm Phrakiat Observatory, Nakhon Ratchasima

The Chalerm Phrakiat Observatory sits on the campus of Suranaree University of Technology in Nakhon Ratchasima (Korat) — one of five regional observatories run by Thailand’s National Astronomical Research Institute (NARIT). The astronomy exhibition is free; the planetarium costs 50 THB for adults and 30 THB for students. It’s open Tuesday to Sunday, 09:00–16:00, closed Monday.

The facility pairs a telescope-equipped observatory building with a digital full-dome planetarium and an exhibition hall covering astronomy, Thai space science and Isan’s own history of skywatching. Planetarium shows run twice on most days — 11:00 and 15:00 — with a third 17:00 show added on Saturdays. Staff lead live presentations rather than running a fixed recording, so content shifts with current events in astronomy. Every Saturday from 18:00 to 22:00, NARIT opens the rooftop telescopes for free public stargazing — weather and city light pollution permitting — as part of its “NARIT Public Night” programme.

It works well as a half-day stop rather than a full day out: the exhibition and one planetarium show together run under two hours. Weekday mornings are quietest; weekend afternoons draw school groups and families, especially around the Saturday planetarium slots.

Insider Tip: If Saturday stargazing is the goal, come for the 17:00 planetarium show first, then stay on for Public Night at 18:00 rather than making two separate trips — clear skies aren’t guaranteed, so check the forecast before committing to the evening session.

Watch out: Public Night telescope viewing depends on clear weather; NARIT can cancel or cut it short with little notice during Thailand’s rainy season, roughly June to October.
