Chang Arena is the home of Buriram United, the most successful football club in Thailand, on the southern edge of Buriram town. Purpose-built for the club, it was Thailand’s first FIFA-standard, club-owned football stadium — and construction took just 256 days, a Guinness World Record for the fastest-built stadium of its class. It opened on 4 June 2011 with 24,000 seats at a construction cost of around 400 million THB; a 2014 renovation added another 8,600 seats, bringing capacity to roughly 32,600. The stadium’s original sponsor name was New i-Mobile Stadium; it became Chang Arena in 2017 under a Chang beer naming-rights deal, and its design nods to Buriram’s elephant heritage.

The club and stadium both trace to Newin Chidchob, the Buriram politician who took over the old Provincial Electricity Authority club in 2009, relocated it to Buriram, renamed it and financed the rapid stadium build alongside the neighbouring race circuit and hotel. That local political and business backing is part of why Buriram — a mid-sized provincial town — ended up with a stadium and motorsport complex on a scale usually reserved for Bangkok.

The stadium anchors a larger sports complex that also takes in the Chang International Circuit and the Buri Ram Castle mall, so the three are easy to combine on one trip out from Buriram town. On non-match days the club runs stadium tours that take in the stands, the pitch, the dressing rooms and the club shop; on match days, the atmosphere — drums, chants and a sea of blue — is the real draw, and the ground is nicknamed the “Thunder Castle,” a nod to Buriram’s Angkor-era castle heritage around nearby Phanom Rung.

Thai League 1 runs across the cooler and wetter months (recent seasons have run roughly August to May), so check Buriram United’s fixture list before planning a match visit. Stadium tours are paid and match tickets are sold separately.

Insider Tip: If a Buriram United fixture and a Chang International Circuit race weekend fall on the same trip, book accommodation early — the town’s limited hotel stock sells out fast when both draw crowds at once.

Key Facts:

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is it called Chang Arena if it used to be i-Mobile Stadium?
Sponsorship. The ground opened as New i-Mobile Stadium in 2011 and was renamed Chang Arena in 2017 when Chang beer took over the naming-rights deal. Locals and older listings still use both names interchangeably.
How big is Chang Arena?
It holds about 32,600 seats. The stadium opened in 2011 with a capacity of 24,000 and was expanded by 8,600 seats in a 2014 renovation.
Can I visit on a non-match day?
Yes — the club runs paid stadium tours (around 100 THB) taking in the stands, pitch, dressing rooms and club shop. Match tickets are sold separately and only apply on fixture days.
Is Chang Arena within walking distance of the Chang International Circuit?
They share the same sports complex on Buriram's southern edge, alongside the Buri Ram Castle mall, so all three are easy to combine in one visit — but it's a drive or shuttle between them, not a walk.
Why is the stadium nicknamed "Thunder Castle"?
It's promoted as the fifth of Buriram's symbolic "castles" (the province is Thailand's Angkor-era castle country, home to Phanom Rung), and the crowd noise on match nights backs up the name.
