Buri Ram Castle
บุรีรัมย์คาสเซิล
Buri Ram Castle looks like an ancient Khmer sanctuary, but it opened on 13 February 2016 as a community mall built by Newin Chidchob, the figure behind the city’s football and motor-racing boom. Its centrepiece is a full-scale replica of the Phanom Rung Historical Park temple — the real 11th-century sanctuary sits about 60 km to the south — set across a 93,000-sqm site that cost more than 370 million THB to build. The complex stands beside Chang Arena football stadium and the Chang International Circuit, on the southern edge of Buriram town.
The design references the villages that once surrounded the real Phanom Rung, with an avenue area, the temple replica itself, and landscaped gardens — including a cactus garden laid out by Nong Nooch Garden, the botanical park near Pattaya better known for its own elaborate grounds. Behind the laterite-coloured facade are restaurants, cafes, fashion outlets and souvenir shops selling Buriram United merchandise. The forecourt and replica prang are the main photo stop, especially on race weekends and match days when the whole sports complex fills up.
It works as a landmark and meeting point rather than a historical site — most visitors pair it with a stadium tour, a race at the circuit, or the drive out to the real Phanom Rung. Late afternoon brings cooler temperatures and better light on the temple facade; check the Buriram United and Chang International Circuit calendars before visiting, since the area is at its liveliest, and its most crowded, around fixtures.
Insider Tip: For photos of the replica prang without crowds, go on a weekday morning outside race or match weeks — the forecourt empties out completely between events.
Watch out: Because it’s built to resemble the genuine Phanom Rung, some visitors mistake the replica for the real historical site. It isn’t — the 11th-century original is a separate, roughly hour-long drive south.
Entry is free and the complex is a short songthaew or taxi ride from central Buriram, with parking on site. It’s open daily from 10:00 to 21:00.
