Hat Sai Khao

Hat Sai Khao — White Sand Beach — is Koh Chang’s longest and most developed beach, running roughly two kilometres along the island’s northwest coast on the Gulf of Thailand. The sand is pale and fine, the entry into the water is gentle, and it’s the default base for most first-time visitors to the island because of the density of resorts, restaurants and beach bars along the strip.

The beach splits roughly into two moods. The northern section is the built-up part — beachfront resorts, restaurants and bars sit close together, and this is where the seafood grills and beach-bar strip get busy after sunset. Head south and the crowd thins fast; within a few hundred metres you’ll find stretches with just loungers and palm shade, popular with people who want the same sand without the northern end’s foot traffic.

Swimming conditions are good for most of the year — a gradual, shallow slope near shore makes it comfortable for casual swimmers and families. That gentle entry can be misleading, though: the seabed drops away more steeply once you’re a fair distance out, and currents pick up during the rainier months. The main stretch has lifeguard coverage, but it’s worth respecting any flag warnings and being cautious swimming after dark, when visibility and lifeguard presence both drop.

Watch out: The shallow, gentle shoreline lulls people into swimming out further than they realise — the drop-off beyond the main swimming zone is real, and currents strengthen noticeably during rainy-season swells.

Insider Tip: Walk south past the resort cluster in the late afternoon — the crowds thin out, the sand is the same quality, and you get an uninterrupted view for sunset without competing for a spot on a rented lounger.

Hat Sai Khao anchors the northern end of Koh Chang’s west-coast strip, within reach of the island’s other beaches — Ban Sai Khao Tourism Community sits right alongside it if you want a look at the fishing-village side of the same stretch, and it’s an easy songthaew ride from the quieter bays further south. Bring reef-safe sunscreen and a waterproof bag for valuables if you’re spending the day on the sand — theft from unattended beach mats is an occasional complaint, as at any busy tourist beach.
