Huai Saneng Reservoir

Huai Saneng Reservoir is an earthen irrigation dam about 5 km southwest of Surin town, in Chaniang subdistrict — a 10-20 minute drive along the Surin-Prasat road (Highway 214). The dam itself stands 20 metres above the original riverbed with a crest running 4.4 km, holding back roughly 20.8 million cubic metres of water. It’s a working irrigation structure for Surin province first, and a local recreation spot second — not a resort or a beach.

The paved crest road is the main draw: locals walk and cycle it in the cool hours, with the reservoir’s still water stretching out on one side and farmland on the other. A scatter of food stalls and simple raft-style restaurants sits near the dam, serving grilled and fried freshwater fish and other northeastern Isan dishes — it’s a genuinely local dining spot, the kind of place where you’re more likely to hear Isan dialect than English. Some vendors rent paddleboats on weekends, though don’t expect longtail-boat tours or organised watersports; this is an irrigation reservoir, not a lake resort.

Watch out: older write-ups of this reservoir describe fishing villages, traditional longtail-boat rides and a 30 km drive from Surin — none of that holds up against current sources. It’s much closer to town (about 5 km) and the “village” atmosphere is really a handful of food vendors by the dam, not a boat-based community.

Evenings are when the reservoir earns its local popularity — the water catches the last light and the crest fills with Surin residents walking off the day’s heat. It’s a workaday, unpretentious spot rather than a landscaped tourist attraction, and that’s the appeal: no entry gate, no souvenir stalls, just a dam, a view, and food stalls that keep serving until the light goes.

Insider Tip: Combine it with Surin National Museum or the Surin City Pillar Shrine earlier in the day, then time your arrival at the reservoir for an hour before sunset — the light on the water is the reason to come, not the activities.

Bring a hat and water if you’re walking the crest at midday; there’s little shade along most of its length. A rental scooter or a short songthaew ride from town is the practical way to get here, since there’s no direct public bus route to the dam.
