Thung Kula Lake, Surin

Thung Kula Lake is a man-made reservoir in Chumphon Buri district, Surin province — not a natural lake, despite how it’s usually described. Thailand’s Irrigation Department excavated more than 750 rai here in the mid-2000s, turning a dry stretch of the historic Thung Kula Ronghai plain into a permanent body of water. The name borrows from that plain, famous across Isan as jasmine rice country, but the lake itself is just this one reservoir, not the wider region.

What draws visitors is the water’s color: a clear, deep blue that looks more like a beach resort than an inland Isan reservoir, a genuine novelty this far from the coast. Around the shore, more than 100 food and drink vendors do business, and the water itself is set up for recreation rather than quiet contemplation — banana boats, pedal boats, and inflatable tube floats are the standard activities, alongside raft-style floating restaurants where you eat with your feet a few inches above the water.

Insider Tip: Go on a weekday if you want it quieter — weekends bring crowds of local day-trippers from Surin and nearby districts, and the food stalls and boat queues get busy fast.

The mood here is closer to a lively local beach day than a peaceful wetland escape — families, music from the food stalls, and kids on tube floats rather than solitude. That’s worth knowing before you go if you’re expecting a still, contemplative lake visit; it’s a recreation spot the local community uses hard on weekends, which is exactly what makes it worth seeing.
