Khun Nan National Park

Khun Nan National Park covers 249 sq km of montane forest on the Thai-Lao border, a few kilometres north of the salt-mining town of Bo Kluea in Nan province. Established in 2009, it protects the western slope of the Luang Prabang Range up to Doi Phi Pan Nam at 1,745 metres — cooler, greener, and far less visited than Nan’s more famous Doi Phu Kha.

The most accessible feature is Sapan Waterfall, a multi-step cascade reached by a stepped trail with a handrail — about 20 minutes each way through mixed forest, easy enough for most fitness levels. Other falls inside the park, including Huai Ha (which runs year-round) and Huai Ti, see far fewer visitors and require more effort or local knowledge to reach; ask at the park office before heading for them, since trail conditions and access change with the season. Birdwatchers rate the park among Nan’s better forest-birding circuits, and the mixed-elevation terrain — lowland valleys up to nearly 1,800 metres — supports a real range of forest bird species, though sightings depend heavily on season and time of day.

Rainy season (June-October) is when the waterfalls run fullest, but trails get slick and the drive up from Nan gets slower. Cool season (November-February) is the more comfortable window for hiking and camping, with genuinely cold nights at elevation — pack for it. Three bungalow rooms and a campground sit at the headquarters near Bo Kluea, a practical option if you want to combine the park with Bo Kluea’s historic salt wells rather than day-tripping from Nan town.

Khun Nan gets a fraction of the visitors that Doi Phu Kha further north pulls in, which is either the appeal or the drawback depending on what you’re after. There’s less signage, fewer other hikers on the trails, and staff who are more used to researchers and local trekkers than tour groups — book any longer trek or camping trip through the park office directly rather than assuming a walk-up will work, especially outside cool season.

Insider Tip: Bo Kluea itself — with its centuries-old salt wells still worked by hand — is worth the same trip as the waterfall. Pair the two rather than treating the park as a standalone stop; the drive up from Nan is the same either way.
