Khun Phaen Residence

Khun Phaen Residence is a cluster of traditional central-Thai houses on Pa Thon Road in Ayutthaya, named after the warrior-poet hero of the classic epic Khun Chang Khun Phaen. It’s free to enter, open daily 08:30-16:30, and sits outside the ticketed historical park zone. Despite the name, the buildings aren’t ancient — research from the Pridi Banomyong Institute dates them to 1940, when statesman Pridi Banomyong had them built as a personal retreat and gave the compound its literary name.
The houses follow the layout of a well-off Ayutthaya-period household: raised teak-style structures connected by open walkways, with rooms recreating a kitchen, bedroom, and reception hall furnished in period style. Information boards inside cover both the Khun Chang Khun Phaen story and the more recent history of who actually built the place — worth reading, since the popular version (a relocated 1894 governor’s mansion) doesn’t hold up against that research. It’s a useful corrective to keep in mind walking around: what you’re seeing is a carefully staged evocation of Ayutthaya-period domestic architecture, not a surviving original.
Insider Tip: Read the information boards before wandering the houses rather than after — knowing the real history changes how you look at the “period” furnishings, and it’s a more interesting story than the straightforward “ancient ruin” framing some guides give it.
The compound is compact and shaded by mature trees, making it a calm stop between the more crowded temple ruins nearby. Watch out: the houses are sometimes booked for costume dramas, wedding photography, or provincial events, which can mean partial closures or crowds of a different sort — check ahead if you’re visiting on a weekend.
