Koh Rok Nok

Koh Rok Nok is an uninhabited island inside Mu Ko Lanta National Park, roughly 45 minutes by speedboat south of Koh Lanta. It’s closed to visitors every year from 16 May to 31 October as part of the park’s seasonal marine closures, alongside its twin Koh Rok Nai and nearby Koh Haa. Check the closure dates before booking a trip outside the November-April window. When open, the entrance fee applies: 400 THB for foreign adults (the special DNP rate set for this island group in September 2022, above the park’s general 200 THB headland rate) and 40 THB for Thai nationals, usually collected by the tour operator or at a park checkpoint.

Clear turquoise water reveals coral gardens just metres from the shore on the island’s main beach, which stretches along the eastern coast backed by tropical vegetation. Snorkellers find shallow reef formations home to parrotfish, angelfish, and butterflyfish, with visibility that regularly exceeds 20 metres in the dry season. The western side has limestone cliffs and smaller coves better suited to swimming than snorkelling. Between water sessions, a short trail through the island’s interior gives a break from the beach without adding much distance. There’s no real hiking here, just enough jungle to feel like you’ve left the shoreline.

Insider Tip: Book the first speedboat departure of the day if your tour offers a choice. Koh Rok Nok gets multiple boatloads through by midday in high season, and the coral near the main landing beach shows the wear from it. The quieter coves further round the island hold up better.

Watch out: Because Koh Rok sits well offshore and every crossing depends on sea conditions, operators cancel or reroute trips at short notice when swells pick up, particularly in the shoulder months either side of the May-October closure. Confirm your operator’s rebooking policy before paying.

No accommodation exists on the island outside the permission-only campsite, so pack reef-safe sunscreen, your own snorkelling gear if you have a preference, drinking water, and a dry bag for valuables. Most tours provide basic gear and lunch, but confirm what’s included before you book. Koh Rok Nok is usually sold as a pair with Koh Rok Nai on the same speedboat trip, and operators running from Koh Lanta often combine both with a stop at Mu Ko Lanta National Park headquarters on the way back.
