Lang Pae

Lang Pae isn’t a destination you drive to — it’s a checkpoint on the main hiking trail up Phu Kradueng National Park, about 5.4 km into the climb from the park headquarters at the base. This part of Loei sits nowhere near the Lao border; Phu Kradueng’s summit trail runs inland, well south of the river that marks the frontier, and the plateau above Lang Pae is reached entirely on foot, not by road.

Hikers treat Lang Pae as the psychological halfway point on the steepest stretch of the ascent, and it’s known for the sign proclaiming “we are Phu Kradueng conquerors” — a near-mandatory photo stop after the hardest climbing is behind you. From here, the trail flattens out considerably for the remaining 3.5 km to Wang Kwang, the service centre on the plateau where most overnight visitors pitch a tent or rent a bungalow. There’s tree cover and shade through most of the climb to this point, though the path beyond Lang Pae opens up and gets hotter with less shelter.

Reaching Lang Pae means committing to the full Phu Kradueng hike — this isn’t a short there-and-back excursion. Porters at the base will carry your bags up for a per-kilo fee if you’d rather climb unencumbered, and most visitors budget three to four hours to cover the 5.5 km to the plateau edge, factoring in rest stops.

Insider Tip: Start the walk early. The park requires climbers to begin the ascent before 1pm so everyone reaches the top before dark, but starting at first light means you pass Lang Pae before the day’s heat sets in.

Watch out: Phu Kradueng closes entirely from 1 June to 30 September for annual trail recovery — there’s no version of this hike available in the rainy season, whatever a tour operator might advertise.

Bring warm layers regardless of season — nights on the plateau above get cold — and plan the visit as a full-day hike (or overnight) rather than a quick stop, since Lang Pae only makes sense in the context of the Phu Kradueng climb itself.
