Phu Kradueng is a tabletop mountain in Loei, and one of Thailand’s classic treks: a steep ~5.5 km climb up to a plateau at around 1,288 metres, where pine forest, open savanna and cliff-edge viewpoints feel more like a temperate highland than tropical Thailand. Entry is 400 THB for foreign adults, the park is open only October to May, and you must start the climb before about 1pm to reach the top before dark.

The climb and the plateau

The ascent is the barrier and the reward — roughly 5.5 km of steady, steep trail (three to four hours for most people) to the edge of the plateau, then another 3.6 km of flat walking to the Wang Kwang campsite. If you’d rather not carry your pack, porters at the base will haul bags up by weight. Up top, trails fan out to cliff viewpoints: Pha Nok Aen for sunrise over a sea of hills, Pha Lom Sak for the postcard sunset, plus waterfalls like Tham Yai and Pen Phop. In the cool season the plateau can wake up to frost — a genuine rarity in Thailand.

Insider Tip: Go up in the morning, stay a night on the plateau, and do the viewpoints at dawn and dusk. Day-tripping wastes the best light and rushes a hard climb — the mountain is built for an overnight.

Planning your visit

The park is open 1 October to 31 May and closed through the rainy season (June–September) to let the trail recover. Cool season (November–February) is busiest and coldest. Pay the 400 THB entry at the base, start climbing by early afternoon at the latest, and book plateau camping ahead in peak weeks.

Watch out: This is a demanding hike, not a viewpoint you drive to. Bring proper shoes, warm layers for the cold nights, and enough water. Anyone unfit or short on time should plan around the climb rather than underestimate it.

Phu Kradueng is in Loei province, in the northeast. View on Google Maps.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much is the entrance fee?
400 THB for foreign adults and 200 THB for foreign children (Thai nationals pay 40/20). You pay at the park office at the base before starting the climb.
How hard is the hike, and how long does it take?
It's a real hike — about 5.5 km of steep trail to the plateau edge, roughly 3–4 hours for a reasonably fit walker, then a further 3.6 km of flat walking to the Wang Kwang campsite. Porters can carry your bags for a per-kilo fee.
When is Phu Kradueng open?
October 1 to May 31. It closes completely during the rainy season (1 June–30 September) for trail recovery. The cool months, November to February, are the most popular and can bring morning frost on the plateau.
Is there a cut-off time to start climbing?
Yes — you must begin the ascent by early afternoon (around 1pm) so you reach the top before dark. Arrive in the morning if you can; the park office stops issuing climbs in mid-afternoon.
Can you stay overnight?
Yes, on the plateau — camping (tents can be rented) and some basic accommodation at Wang Kwang. Book ahead in peak season, as spots fill fast, and bring warm layers; nights get genuinely cold up there.
