Pu Bo Bid National Park
วนอุทยานภูบ่อบิด
Pu Bo Bid is officially a forest park (วนอุทยาน) — a Royal Forest Department designation, not a national park — established in 1996 and covering around 4,000 rai on the edge of Loei town. The draw is a short, steep climb to cliff-edge viewpoints over the Mekong valley and Loei town itself, with a flat 20 THB entry fee for everyone and daily hours from 06:00 to 19:00 (last entry 18:30).
The main route climbs roughly 700 metres of concrete steps from Wat Pa Trai Suwan; a second route via Wat Pa Suthisalak is currently closed to visitors for safety reasons, so check which trailhead is open before you set off. Small cave shrines are cut into the limestone along the way. From the top, the view splits two ways — Loei town spread out on one side, forested ridgelines running toward the Mekong on the other. On cool-season mornings, mist often pools in the valleys below and burns off by mid-morning, which is what draws the early crowds.
Watch out: Don’t confuse this with Phu Kradueng or Phu Ruea, Loei’s two well-known national parks further from town, both multi-day or full-day trekking destinations. Pu Bo Bid is a short climb you can fit in before breakfast from a Loei town hotel — a completely different scale of outing.
Insider Tip: Arrive by 6 AM if you want the mist and soft light without the crowd — this is a popular sunrise spot with locals precisely because it’s so close to town, and the small car park fills up fast on cool-season weekends.
