Magic Hill

A stretch of Route 2258 in Khao Kho plays a trick on the eye: park a car in neutral on the marked section between the km 17 and km 18 posts, and it drifts backward — uphill, or so it looks. Pour water from a bottle onto the tarmac and it runs the same “wrong” way. It’s free, it takes five minutes, and it isn’t magic — it’s a gravity hill, one of a handful of Thai roads where the surrounding slope disguises the true grade.

The illusion works because the hillside and treeline around the road block a clear view of the horizon. Your brain reads the visible landmarks as level, so the section that’s actually sloping downhill toward Phetchabun’s Khao Kho valley reads as an incline. Roll a car or motorcycle into neutral on the line locals have marked with paint, and it creeps “up” for about 10 metres before momentum runs out. Cyclists get the same effect free-wheeling through. Most people try it two or three times before they believe what they’re seeing, even after someone explains the trick.

There’s no building, shop, or shade here — just a bend of two-lane mountain road bordered by forest, with a small pull-off wide enough for a handful of cars. Weekends bring a steady trickle of Thai road-trippers stopping between Khao Kho’s other viewpoints, engines idling while everyone takes a turn. On weekdays you may have the spot to yourself. The air smells of pine and diesel from the mountain switchbacks rather than anything more exotic — this is a five-minute curiosity stop, not a destination in its own right.

Insider Tip: Bring a half-full water bottle rather than relying on someone else having one — pouring it slowly along the road surface makes the illusion more obvious on video than watching a car roll.

Watch out: The road is a real, active mountain route with blind bends either side of the marked stretch. Pull fully off the tarmac before stopping, and don’t linger in the road itself to film — motorbikes come through fast on the descent.

Magic Hill works best as a quick stop bolted onto a wider Khao Kho itinerary — many visitors pair it with the Chedi Phra Borommasaririkkathat and the Khao Kho Sacrificial Monument, both a short drive away on the same mountain loop. There’s no dress code, no fee, and nothing to book. Just don’t expect it to look like anything in photos beforehand; the “trick” only registers once you’re standing on the tarmac yourself.
