Ban Phet Dam Windmill Field

Baan Phet Dam Windmill Field is a working 60-megawatt wind farm in Thung Samo subdistrict, Khao Kho district, where 24 turbines with 120-metre blades — the longest in Thailand — spin at 1,050 metres elevation. Walking the site is free; a tram tour costs 40 THB per person. Open daily 06:00-18:00.

Experience

The 24 turbines stand roughly 110 metres tall on towers spread across more than 300 rai of ridge-top grassland, visible from multiple points around Khao Kho and neighbouring Khaem Son subdistrict. Each blade span of 120 metres makes these the longest wind turbine blades anywhere in Thailand, and the farm produces an average of 140 million units of electricity a year. Beyond the turbines themselves, there’s a gravity-powered wooden cart ride called Formula Mong that races downhill, and a single-rope swing called Mong Swing for an adrenaline stop between photos. A row of stalls near the entrance sells handmade goods from Khao Kho villagers.

Atmosphere & Timing

Visit during the rainy season (roughly June-October) for a chance to see mist drifting through the turbines below the ridge line — a well-known photography draw, though it depends on the morning’s weather and isn’t guaranteed. At 1,050 metres, temperatures run noticeably cooler than lowland Phetchabun year-round, with wind gusting steadily across the open field.

Practical

The windmill field sits within Khao Kho’s cluster of viewpoints and attractions, an easy add-on to a loop that includes Khao Kho National Park and the hilltop chedi at Wat Phra That Pha Son Kaew. Parking and a restroom are on site; bring a light jacket even in the hot season, since the elevation and open wind keep it cooler than expected.

Insider Tip: Arrive close to the 06:00 opening if you’re chasing the sea-of-mist effect — it typically burns off within an hour or two of sunrise.

Watch out: The turbines and open ridge offer little shade. Wind at this elevation can be strong enough to make the tram ride and viewpoints feel considerably colder than the temperature down in Phetchabun town.
