Kaeng Bang Rachan is a stretch of boulder-strewn rapids on the Khek River in Khao Kho district, right against the boundary with Thung Salaeng Luang National Park. It’s not a waterfall — “kaeng” means river rapids in Thai — and the main draw is a wooden-boat ride over the rock-strewn shallows, timed for March and April when the river hosts one of Thailand’s only populations of freshwater jellyfish.

Local operators run wooden boats along roughly 2 km of rapids, with guides pointing out birdlife and butterflies along the banks and, in season, the small freshwater jellyfish drifting near the surface — a genuine rarity, since almost nowhere else in Thailand has them. Boat rides cost around 150 THB per person for groups of five or more, with a 600 THB minimum charge for smaller groups. Outside the jellyfish season, the ride is still worth doing for the rapids and forest scenery, just without the headline attraction.

Water levels and character shift through the year. Rainy season pushes more water through the rapids — a more dramatic scene, though boat trips can pause in high flow for safety — while dry season (November-February) leaves the water calmer and shallower.

Insider Tip: the freshwater jellyfish only appear for about two months a year — if seeing them is the point of your visit, check with the local tourism office before making the trip, since bloom timing shifts with rainfall and water temperature.

Watch out: the boat fee is charged per group as much as per person — groups under five pay the 600 THB minimum regardless of headcount, so it’s worth teaming up with other visitors on quiet days.

Getting there means the roads of Khao Kho district, best by car. Combine it with other Khao Kho highland stops like Khao Kho National Park or Khao Kho Royal Palace, both a scenic drive away.
