Mueang Thao U-Thong Island and Krachab Yai Swamp
เกาะเมืองท้าวอู่ทองและบึงกระจับใหญ่
A roughly 300-metre bamboo-slat bridge — the saphan luk buab — carries visitors on foot or bicycle across Krachab Yai Swamp to Mueang Thao U-Thong Island, about 2 kilometers west of Hankha district center in Chainat province. The island covers around 120 rai in the middle of a swamp spanning roughly 1,116 rai, and it’s free to cross. Bicycles rent for about 20 THB if you’d rather ride than walk the bridge.
The swamp itself functions as a fish-breeding ground and bird habitat, with pink lotus covering large stretches of open water when in bloom. Local legend holds the island as a sacred site tied to old stories about Mueang Thao U-Thong, and it remains a place residents speak of with some reverence rather than treating as a straightforward day-trip stop. Beyond the bridge crossing, evening boat trips can be arranged separately to watch waterfowl settle in across the swamp — a quieter, slower way to see the birdlife than crossing the bridge itself.
Insider Tip: Go for the bridge crossing itself as much as the island — the walk or cycle out over open water, lotus on both sides, is the most distinctive part of the visit. The island beyond it is small and quickly explored on foot.
Watch out: this is a minor rural attraction with essentially no facilities on the island — no shops, limited shade. Bring water and sun protection, and check locally for lotus bloom timing if that’s the reason for the trip, since coverage varies by season.
