Mueang Kao Kamphaeng Saen

Mueang Kao Kamphaeng Saen is a Dvaravati-period walled town in Nakhon Pathom’s Thung Khwang subdistrict, roughly 24km north of Nakhon Pathom town. No original structures survive — what remains is the rounded-rectangular outline of moats and earthen ramparts enclosing about 400 rai (64 hectares), still visible from the air. Entry is free; the site currently operates as a provincial Boy Scout camp.

Walking the perimeter, you’re tracing a town roughly 750 metres across whose four original gates were still identifiable in 1975 aerial photographs — Pratu Tha Nang Song to the north, Pratu Tha Phra to the east, Pratu Tha Chang to the south, and Pratu Tha Talat to the west. Historians believe Kamphaeng Saen was built by the rulers of the larger Dvaravati town of Nakhon Chai Si to control trade along the region’s canals and rivers, positioning it as a river port feeding Nakhon Chai Si’s maritime trade — the two towns appear to have risen and declined together, sometime within the broad Dvaravati era that spanned roughly the 6th to 11th centuries. Inside the earthworks, old trees and small ponds now shelter a range of bird species, and the shade is noticeably cooler than the open farmland outside.

Unlike walled Dvaravati towns that get restored for tourism, Kamphaeng Saen was left alone: no reconstructed gates, no interpretive centre, nothing rebuilt on top of the original earthworks. What you’re looking at is the raw archaeological footprint, worn down by well over a thousand years of monsoon rain but still legible as a fortified town rather than just a lump of ground.

There’s no museum, no signage translating the history, and nothing built above ground — this is a site for people who want to see the shape of an old town in the landscape, not a polished heritage park. Early morning is quietest and coolest for the walk around the earthworks.

The old town today functions as Kamphaeng Saen City Scout Camp (ค่ายลูกเสือเมืองกำแพงแสน), run by the Nakhon Pathom Primary Educational Service Area Office. Watch out: because it’s an active scout camp, access can be restricted during camp events — call ahead (0 3475 2846) rather than assuming the site is open. Insider Tip: combine the visit with His Majesty The King’s Insect Park on the Kasetsart University Kamphaeng Saen campus, about 4km away, to make a half-day out of an otherwise quick stop.
