Nam Hueang Thai-Lao

Nam Hueang Thai-Lao is a working border crossing on the Nam Hueang River in Tha Li district, Loei — a single-lane concrete bridge about 110 metres long, with a Thai immigration checkpoint at one end. It’s not to be confused with the larger Thai-Lao Friendship Bridges over the Mekong at Nong Khai or Mukdahan; this smaller crossing connects Tha Li to Xayaburi province in Laos. Viewing the bridge and border area is free, and the checkpoint area is open daily from 08:00 to 17:00.

The bridge opened in October 2004 and functions as a genuine trade and travel route rather than a tourist installation — expect customs facilities, a border-pass office, and parking rather than a landscaped viewpoint. Thai nationals without a passport can apply on the spot for a 3-day border pass (a 40 THB document fee, plus a photocopy of a Thai ID and two photos) to cross into Xayaburi. Foreign travellers need a valid passport and to meet Laos’s standard entry requirements — the border-pass option doesn’t apply to non-Thai nationals, and crossing rules can change, so it’s worth confirming current requirements before planning to cross rather than just view.

Most visitors come for the border-crossing experience itself rather than to cross over: watching the cross-border trade and traffic, and the contrast between the quiet Thai and Lao riverbanks. It’s a rural crossing, not the Nong Khai bridge’s scale, so don’t expect crowds or much in the way of facilities beyond the checkpoint itself.

Watch out: Don’t assume this is “the” Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge you may have read about elsewhere — several bridges share similar names across different provinces, and only the Nong Khai, Mukdahan, Nakhon Phanom, and Chiang Rai crossings carry the numbered “First” through “Fourth” Friendship Bridge names over the Mekong.
