Phu Ruea National Park centres on a 1,365-metre mountain shaped like an overturned boat hull — “phu ruea” translates to “boat mountain” — about 50 km from Loei town. It’s one of the coldest spots in Thailand, with frost on winter mornings some years, though the official national record low belongs to Sakon Nakhon, not here. Entry is 200 THB for foreign adults (100 THB children), 40/20 THB for Thai adults/children, open daily 05:30-20:00.

Experience

The park road climbs most of the way up the mountain by paved switchbacks, which is what makes Phu Ruea unusually accessible for a Thai summit: rangers close the last 1.3 km to private cars at a parking area, and from there it’s either a cramped 10-THB songthaew ride or a walkable forest trail up to Yod Phu Ruea, the summit viewpoint. The final stretch is a gentle incline rather than a scramble, and it opens onto sweeping views across the Mekong valley toward Laos on a clear day.

Below the summit, the park mixes deciduous forest with patches of pine — unusual at this latitude, and part of why the air feels more temperate-zone than tropical. Rock formations scattered through the park have their own local names — Pha Lon Noi, Hin Wua Non, Suan Hin Tao among them — and a scatter of viewpoints and short waterfalls give reasons to detour off the main summit route if time allows.

Atmosphere & Timing

Insider Tip: Time a summit visit for shortly after sunrise in December or January. Valley fog is a near-daily feature of the cool season here, and on the coldest mornings frost — locally “mae khanueng” — settles on exposed grass near the top, a genuine novelty at this latitude that draws Thai visitors from across the country.

Watch out: Cloud tends to build over the summit by late morning, especially outside the cool season, which can wipe out the Mekong-valley view entirely. Aim to be at the top before 10am if the view is the point of the trip.

Practical

The park sits in Nong Bua subdistrict, Phu Ruea district, about 50 km — roughly an hour’s drive — from Loei town, with no scheduled public transport running into the park itself. A car or rented motorbike covers the road up; pack a warm layer even in the hot season, since temperatures at the summit run noticeably cooler than the valley floor.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Phu Ruea really the coldest place in Thailand?
It's one of the coldest and the most famous for it, with frost and near-zero mornings some winters — but the official record low for Thailand (-1C, recorded 1974) belongs to Sakon Nakhon, not Phu Ruea. What Phu Ruea offers is reliable, accessible cold — a paved road most of the way to a 1,365m summit.
Do I need to hike to the summit?
Not really. The park road climbs to within about 1.3 km of the top, where rangers close it to private vehicles. From there it's a short songthaew ride (around 10 THB) or a walkable nature trail through forest to Yod Phu Ruea, the summit viewpoint.
What's the entry fee?
200 THB for foreign adults, 100 THB for foreign children; 40 THB for Thai adults, 20 THB for Thai children. The park is open daily, 05:30-20:00.
When's the best time to see frost or fog?
December through February, especially just after sunrise — cold snaps bring frost (locally called "mae khanueng") to exposed grassy patches near the summit some mornings, and valley fog is a near-daily feature of the cool season.
How do I get there from Loei town?
About 50 km by road, roughly an hour's drive. There's no scheduled public transport into the park itself — a car or rented motorbike is the practical option, with songthaews covering the last stretch to the summit.
