Namtok Mae Phun

Namtok Mae Phun is a tiered limestone waterfall in Uttaradit’s Laplae district, about 20 km from Laplae town. Water drops in stages down a series of cascades, each level pooling into a shallow basin shallow enough for a casual swim, and entry is free.

The tiers sit within a stretch of forest reached by a short walk from the parking area, and a scatter of local stalls near the entrance sell northern Thai food and Laplae’s own specialties — the district is known regionally for lang sad, a rare relative of longkong grown almost nowhere else in Thailand, along with woven textiles and other local produce. It’s a small, informal setup rather than a proper market: a handful of vendors rather than rows of stalls, there for the trickle of visitors the waterfall brings rather than the other way round.

Insider Tip: Combine the trip with a stop at a lang sad orchard if you’re visiting between June and August, when the fruit is in season locally — Laplae vendors will often point you toward one if you ask.

Flow depends heavily on season. The tiers run fullest in the months just after the rains, roughly October to December, and thin out noticeably by the late dry season (March-May), when some of the upper pools can reduce to a trickle. Photographers get the most dramatic water at the start of that window; swimmers get the most comfortable pools once the initial post-monsoon flow has settled.

Watch out: Namtok Mae Phun doesn’t show up reliably on mapping apps, and the turn-off from the main road is easy to miss. Budget extra time to ask locally in Laplae rather than trusting GPS to get you the last few kilometres.

Getting there requires your own transport — a car or motorbike from Laplae town, following signs and local directions for the final stretch rather than a fixed route. There’s no public transport running directly to the falls. Bring cash for the food stalls, swimwear if you plan to get in the water, and sturdy sandals for the uneven, often wet approach to the lower tiers.
