Namtok Pa Wai

Namtok Pa Wai is a limestone waterfall of more than 100 small tiers inside Namtok Pha Charoen National Park, reached via a roughly 17–20km side road off Highway 1090 (the Mae Sot–Umphang route, turning off around the km 40–42 marker) to Ban Pa Wai village, then a marked footpath of about 1km from the car park to the falls. Unlike the multi-hour trek the name might suggest, most of the effort here is in the drive, not the walk.

Water runs year-round, fed by the Huai Pa Wai creek, and the falls take their name from the rattan (wai) growing thick around the site. The many small limestone tiers mean you’re looking at a long, stepped cascade rather than a single dramatic drop — closer in character to Namtok Pha Charoen, the park’s main waterfall a short distance away, than to a tall single-stage fall. Flow and colour are at their best in the late rainy season into early winter, roughly October through December, when the surrounding forest is fullest and the water clearest.

Insider Tip: Combine the trip with Mon Mok Tawan, the sea-of-mist viewpoint in the same village — it shares the Ban Pa Wai access road and is a five-minute drive from the waterfall car park, so you’re not making two separate trips into this stretch of Phop Phra district.

The park’s own listing still describes Namtok Pha Charoen National Park as “in preparation” (เตรียมการ) rather than a fully gazetted park, which is part of why there’s currently no set entrance fee at Pa Wai itself — that can change if the park’s status is finalised, so it’s worth a quick call to the park office (0 5503 0178) if you’re planning ahead rather than assuming it stays free indefinitely.

Watch out: The access road is a long rural drive before you reach any parking — this isn’t a roadside waterfall, and there’s no public transport option. A private car or motorbike is the only practical way in, and fuel up before leaving Highway 1090.

Swimming is possible in the pools among the lower tiers when the flow is calm, though the multi-tiered limestone can be slick underfoot — proper footwear with grip matters more than swimwear here. Bring water and snacks; there’s nothing to buy once you’re past the village.
