Namtok Pha Sawan

Namtok Pha Sawan is a seven-tier limestone waterfall in Thong Pha Phum district, inside Kanchanaburi province’s Srinakarin Dam National Park — a different park, and a different waterfall system, to the province’s better-known Erawan and Sai Yok falls. The name means “heavenly cliff,” and the tallest of its seven tiers drops around 80 metres down a limestone face into pools below.

The closure dates matter more than anything else about this site. The park shuts the waterfall area to visitors every year from 1 May to 31 October — the full length of Thailand’s rainy season — reopening on 1 November. This isn’t a soft recommendation; it’s a safety closure tied to flash-flood risk on the stream, and turning up during those months means a locked gate, not just a quieter falls. Plan an out-of-season Kanchanaburi trip around this if Pha Sawan is on the list.

Once the park reopens, the falls are reached by a roughly 40-minute walk from the car park along a forest trail — expect it to still be soft or muddy in November, close to the reopening date. A ranger checkpoint about 2km before the falls charges the standard park entrance fee — 200 THB for foreign adults, 40 THB for Thai adults, with reduced child rates — rather than a large ticketed gate like Erawan’s, which is also why hours and access can vary more from day to day than at the province’s headline waterfalls.

Watch out: Because it’s a small ranger checkpoint rather than a staffed visitor centre, there’s also no one checking conditions for you on a casual visit — ask the ranger unit (or a Thong Pha Phum-based guide) about current water levels before setting out, especially in the weeks just after the November reopening when the stream can still run high.

Getting there requires your own transport — car or motorbike — since public transport doesn’t run to the trailhead from Kanchanaburi town. Bring water shoes for the rocks around the pools, drinking water, and snacks, as there are no facilities at the falls themselves.

Insider Tip: Visit in November rather than the dry-season months of February to April — the water flow is still strong from the rains just ended, and the closure means far fewer visitors have discovered it yet that season.
