Namtok Sai Yok Yai

Namtok Sai Yok Yai — also known locally as Namtok Khao Chon, “the leaping waterfall” — drops off a limestone cliff straight into the Khwae Noi River inside Sai Yok National Park, Kanchanaburi. Entry costs 300 THB for foreign adults (150 THB children) and 60 THB for Thai adults (30 THB children), the park’s standard rate since the 2022 fee reform, and gates run daily 08:30-16:00.

The falls take their alternate name from the way the water clears the cliff edge rather than cascading down a slope — a genuine drop rather than a tiered stream. At the base, the flow pools into a natural basin used for swimming and wading, with smooth riverside rock for picnicking nearby. A suspension bridge crosses the Khwae Noi close to the falls, and short nature trails lead past three small caves in the surrounding limestone. The forest is dense enough that birdlife is easier to hear than see, especially early in the day.

Flow varies sharply by season. Rainy season (June-October) brings the fullest, most forceful drop and the coldest water; by the hot season the falls thin out considerably, though the park stays open and the pools remain swimmable. Photographers generally do best either just after opening or in the last hour before closing, when the light angles into the limestone amphitheater rather than sitting flat overhead.

Reaching the falls means driving or riding Highway 323 from Kanchanaburi town — there’s no train or boat service directly to the site, unlike some of Kanchanaburi’s other river attractions.

Insider Tip: Rainy-season visitors get the most dramatic waterfall but a stronger, colder current in the pools — check with park staff before swimming if the flow looks heavy, rather than judging it from the bank.

Watch out: Don’t confuse this with Sai Yok Noi Waterfall, a separate site further down Highway 323 near the Nam Tok train station — different park, different fee, and a much smaller drop.

Sai Yok Elephant Village and Sai Yok Noi Waterfall are both further along the same highway if you’re making a day of it, with Kanchanaburi town as the base.
