Namtok Sai Khao National Park

Namtok Sai Khao National Park protects a seven-tier waterfall in Pattani province’s Khok Pho district, its forest spilling across the provincial borders into Yala and Songkhla. “Sai Khao” means “white sand” — a reference to the pale sandstone and quartz lining the streambed, which gives the falling water a distinctly light, clear look next to the darker rock typical of the surrounding hills. Entry is 100 THB for foreign adults (50 THB children) and 20 THB for Thai adults (10 THB children), open daily 08:00-17:00.

A marked trail from the park office reaches the lower two or three tiers in 30-45 minutes of easy-to-moderate walking through lowland rainforest, past dipterocarp trees and the occasional hornbill call overhead. The lower pools are wide and shallow enough for casual swimming; the upper tiers require a rougher scramble over wet rock and see far fewer visitors as a result. Water volume peaks from June through December — by April the upper levels can thin to a trickle, so time a visit around the wetter half of the year if a full cascade matters to you.

Watch out: Pattani is one of Thailand’s three southernmost provinces (with Yala and Narathiwat), where an insurgency that reignited in 2004 has led most Western foreign offices, including the UK FCDO, to advise against all but essential travel. Khok Pho district and the waterfall see regular domestic visitors without incident, but check your government’s current advisory before planning a trip, travel during daylight, and stay on the main access road rather than exploring rural side tracks.

Insider Tip: Combine the visit with Wat Sai Khao, a working eighteenth-century monastery a short drive away in the same sub-district — it’s an easy pairing since both share the Sai Khao name and district.

Pack sturdy shoes with grip for the wet rock sections, swimwear, and a dry bag for your phone — there’s a small shop near the park office for drinks and snacks, but nothing beyond that once you’re on the trail.
