Namtok Wang Nam Mok

Namtok Wang Nam Mok drops about 30 metres over a ridge of distinctively shaped rock cliffs just north of Ban Wang Nam Mok village in Nong Khai’s Si Chiang Mai district. Unlike waterfalls that demand a forest trek, a road runs to the base — you can drive right up to the pool, no hike required. Entry is free, and the lower section opens into a large swimming pool with a flat stone platform beside it.

The water spills down in stages rather than a single drop, running over smooth rock before pooling at the bottom where most people swim. Cliffs closing in on both sides give it an unusual profile for the region — locals describe the rock face as “แปลกตา,” distinctive-looking, rather than a typical Isan cascade. Forest presses in close on the approach road, and the sound of water carries well before the falls come into view.

Insider Tip: Flow depends entirely on rain. Visit during or just after the rainy season, June through October, for the fullest cascade — by February to April it can slow to a trickle over the same rocks, so check recent conditions before making a special trip in the dry months.

Ban Wang Nam Mok, the small village the waterfall takes its name from, sits close enough to visit on the same stop. It runs modest homestays and mixes Lanna-style northern Thai culture with the Lan Xang traditions carried across the Mekong from Laos — a cultural blend that’s unusual this far into Isan. There’s no public transport to either the village or the falls, so a car or motorbike from Si Chiang Mai town is the practical way in.

Pack a change of clothes and a waterproof bag if you’re swimming, since there are no changing rooms at the site. Combine the trip with Namtok Than Thip, another Nong Khai waterfall, or the Ban Wang Nam Mok village itself for a fuller day in this stretch of Si Chiang Mai district.
