Nong Khai Aquarium

Nong Khai Aquarium operates on the Khon Kaen University Nong Khai campus, focused specifically on freshwater species from the Mekong River and its tributaries rather than the marine life most Thai aquariums build around. It’s a modest, education-oriented facility tied to the university rather than a large commercial attraction, and sizing your expectations accordingly makes for a better visit.

The exhibits recreate river habitats for native Mekong species, including a giant Mekong catfish specimen among the displays — one of the region’s most striking freshwater fish and a reminder of how large the river’s native species can grow. Smaller, more colourful fish share tank space with driftwood and aquatic plants nearby. Because the collection is regional rather than global, the signage leans educational: expect explanations of the Mekong ecosystem and the pressures facing it, rather than just species labels.

Insider Tip: Go on a weekday morning if you want the place close to yourself — it draws school groups and family visitors on weekends, and the tanks are compact enough that a crowd changes the experience.

Watch out: It’s closed on Mondays, in line with many other university and campus-run attractions in Thailand — check the day before making the trip out from town, since there’s little else to do on the campus itself if you arrive on a closed day.

The aquarium is a short tuk-tuk or taxi ride from central Nong Khai rather than walking distance — factor that into a day that also includes the Mekong riverfront or Sala Kaeo Ku on the edge of town. Bring a camera, but skip the flash near the tanks. This isn’t a full-day attraction on its own — an hour or so is enough to see the collection — so it works best paired with another Nong Khai stop rather than as the sole reason for a visit.
