Pai Land Split
แผ่นดินแยก
Pai Land Split is a farmland fissure a short drive outside Pai town, opened up by a 2008 earthquake and now run by the landowner as a donation-based rest stop. There’s no ticket booth — you walk a short dirt path along the crack, then sit for fruit and homemade hibiscus juice before leaving whatever you think the visit was worth.
The earthquake struck along a fault line running through the farmer’s land, splitting the ground into a fissure that has continued to widen with subsequent tremors and monsoon erosion. The crack cuts across what was cultivated farmland, and walking its edge you can see the layered soil profile exposed on both sides — clay, laterite, and topsoil stacked in bands that give a rough sense of how deep the split actually runs.
What keeps the place on the Pai loop isn’t really the geology, though — it’s the stop itself. The landowner turned the disruption into a small hospitality operation: a simple hut serving sliced seasonal fruit, roasted peanuts, and cold roselle (hibiscus) juice, offered to every visitor regardless of whether they buy anything. The pricing is pay-what-you-want, which locals and guidebooks alike describe as genuinely donation-based rather than a soft-sell minimum. Bring small baht notes, since there’s no fixed menu or card machine.
Insider Tip: Combine the stop with Pai Canyon and the WWII memorial bridge — they sit on the same loop east of town and together make a half-day motorbike circuit without much backtracking.
Watch out: The site is unstaffed farmland, not a managed park — there’s minimal fencing around the fissure edge, so keep an eye on kids and watch your footing on the loose soil, especially after rain.
