Pak Phanang Retro Market
ตลาดย้อนยุคปากพนัง
Pak Phanang Retro Market runs along both banks of Khlong Bang Chalak, the canal that connects to the Pak Phanang River in the middle of this southern Thai river town. It’s free to enter and operates every Sunday, roughly from mid-afternoon (2-3pm) to 8pm — a few secondary listings mention a Saturday session as well, so confirm the day if you’re making a special trip rather than passing through on a weekend already.
Two-storey wooden shophouses with clay-tile roofs line the canal on both sides, giving the market its “retro” name — this is the town’s original commercial waterfront rather than a purpose-built theme market. Vendors set up along the walkways selling southern Thai snacks and desserts: steamed khanom tom, banana cakes, grilled sticky rice wrapped and cooked over charcoal, and chilled pandan tea from the herbal drink stalls. Local weekend folk performances and traditional games run alongside the food stalls, drawing more Thai families from the district than foreign visitors.
Watch out: most stalls are cash-only in small denominations, and there’s no ATM directly on the market strip — withdraw what you need before heading down to the canal.
The market sits inside Pak Phanang’s old commercial core, so parking is limited to the surrounding streets rather than a dedicated lot. It gets busiest between 5pm and 7pm as the light softens over the canal and the dinner crowd arrives; going right at opening avoids the thickest crowds if you want a clearer look at the shophouses themselves.
Insider Tip: Walk the far bank of the canal first — most visitors stick to the near side where the entrance is, so the food stalls opposite tend to have shorter queues for the same dishes.
