Pakpanang Beach And Talumpuk Cape
ชายทะเลปากพนังและแหลมตะลุมพุก
Talumpuk Cape is a curved sand spit running north-south into the Gulf of Thailand at Pak Phanang, about six kilometres of crescent-shaped beach backing onto a working fishing village. This is Gulf coast, not Andaman — a useful distinction, since most of Nakhon Si Thammarat’s better-known beaches face the other way. Entry is free, and the community here is a genuine mix of Muslim, Chinese, and native Thai fishing families rather than a resort strip built for visitors.
On 25 October 1962, Tropical Storm Harriet made landfall directly on this cape, and the resulting storm surge destroyed the villages that stood here and killed more than 900 people — Thailand’s deadliest recorded storm disaster. That history is why Laem Talumphuk carries more weight locally than a typical beach; the subdistrict’s own historical records treat it as a defining event. The village that exists today was rebuilt afterward, and Storm Pabuk put the district on high alert again in January 2019 before it weakened short of landfall.
- Entry: Free
- Coast: Gulf of Thailand (not Andaman)
- Beach length: About 6km, crescent-shaped
- 1962 history: Tropical Storm Harriet’s storm surge killed 900+ here
- Facilities: Restaurants, toilets, showers along the beach; bird-watching tower at the cape’s tip
Longtail boats and drying racks of salted fish line the shore where fishing families still work daily. Mangrove forest backs part of the cape, with a nature trail through it, and vendors at the tip sell fresh shellfish straight off the boats — grilled or boiled to order, cheaply. A bird-watching tower at the cape’s point gives a wide view back along the sand spit, useful for spotting the shape of the coastline that made this such a dangerous place to be in 1962.
Watch out: This coast sits in the Gulf’s cyclone-exposure window, roughly October to January. It’s rarely dangerous for a day visit, but check forecasts before planning an overnight stay in typhoon season — Pabuk’s near-miss in 2019 is a recent reminder the risk isn’t purely historical.
Pak Phanang town is close enough to combine with a visit — the Pak Phanang Retro Market makes an easy pairing on the same trip to Nakhon Si Thammarat province. A few homestays operate in the fishing village itself if you want to stay past sunset rather than day-trip from the city.
