Kaeng Kabao is a stretch of rock-cut Mekong rapids in Mukdahan’s Wan Yai district, about 35 km from town and close enough to the Nakhon Phanom border that That Phanom district is only 24 km further along the river. Centuries of current have worn the stone shelf into holes, channels, and cave-like hollows, and in the dry season — January to May — the water drops low enough to expose sandbars and small river islands between the rocks. Visit outside those months and much of that detail disappears under higher water.

On the bank beside the rapids stands a white marble naga statue, Phaya Si Phuchong Mukda Nakkharat, facing out toward the river. It’s easy to mix up with Mukdahan’s other, larger naga: Phaya Si Mukda Maha Muni Nilapala Nakharat, a blue-green statue on Phu Manorom hill roughly 32 km south, at a completely different temple site. The Kaeng Kabao grounds also hold a pavilion built around the 12-animal zodiac and a smaller pavilion covering the region’s eight ethnic groups, plus a low sky-walk platform that gives a slightly elevated view over the rock formations and current.

Watch out: The rapids look calm in patches and violent in others, and it’s the powerful mid-channel flow between the rocks — not the shallow edges — that causes the accidents locals warn about. If you’re tubing, stay in the areas vendors point out as safe rather than picking your own spot.

The site has no gate and no admission charge, and there’s no fixed closing ritual — it’s simply open riverbank, roughly 08:00 to 20:00. Vendors nearby sell moo han, a marinated grilled pork dish that takes its name from the area, along with basic food stalls and tube rentals for the water. Shade is limited across the exposed rock, so midday visits get hot fast.

Insider Tip: Go in the late dry season (March-April) for the clearest read of the rock formations, but bring more water than you think you need — there’s little shelter from the sun once you’re out on the stone.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there an entrance fee for Kaeng Kabao?
No. It's a free, open riverbank site in Ban Na Kaen Noi, Pong Kham subdistrict, open daily from around 08:00 to 20:00.
When is the best time to visit?
Dry season, January to May. That's when the Mekong drops low enough to expose the mid-river sandbars and stone islands that give the rapids their shape — in the flood months the water covers most of the rock formations.
Is the naga statue at Kaeng Kabao the same one on Phu Manorom hill?
No. The white marble naga at Kaeng Kabao is Phaya Si Phuchong Mukda Nakkharat, a separate monument by the riverbank in Wan Yai district. The larger blue-green naga at Phu Manorom, Phaya Si Mukda Maha Muni Nilapala Nakharat, sits on a hilltop temple about 32 km south — a different statue at a different site.
How do I get to Kaeng Kabao from Mukdahan town?
It's about 35 km from central Mukdahan. There's no public bus route directly to the site, so arrange a car, motorbike, or tuk-tuk for the trip to Ban Na Kaen Noi in Pong Kham subdistrict.
Can you swim or tube in the rapids?
Tube rental is available on-site for the calmer eddies near the bank. Stick to areas locals point out as safe — the strong-current channels between the rocks are the ones to avoid, not the slow, shallow ones, since the powerful mid-channel flow is what causes accidents here.
