Phu Huai I San
ภูห้วยอีสัน
Phu Huai I San is a sunrise and sea-of-mist viewpoint above the Mekong River in Ban Muang subdistrict, Sangkhom district, Nong Khai province. It’s free to visit, but you can’t drive to the top — shared songthaew transport runs from near Wat Kaew Sadet Chaimongkhol for about 60 THB per person round trip, typically operating 05:00-08:00 while there are passengers to fill the trucks.
There are two viewpoints. The first is where the songthaew drops you, with a few stepped platforms and a couple of small drink vendors selling coffee and snacks. The second is about 200 metres further uphill on foot, reached via a bamboo walkway to a central deck with the widest, most elevated outlook — this is the one worth the extra walk. Below, the Mekong’s islands and sandbars spread out toward the Lao side, and on clear mornings the low sun catches the water and the mist pooling in the valley. Arrive at the pickup point by around 6am to reach the top in time for the 6:30am sunrise; the light flattens out after 7am and the songthaew service tapers off once the morning crowd has gone up.
Despite what older write-ups claim, there’s no documented cave system on this mountain — the draw here is the mist and river view, not caves or Buddhist shrines carved into rock alcoves. If a source tells you otherwise, treat it as description of a different hill in the area.
Insider Tip: Bring cash in small notes for the songthaew fare and the drink vendors — there’s no card payment option this far from town.
Watch out: The songthaew only runs in the early morning window; miss it and you’ll need to arrange separate transport, since there’s no regular service later in the day.
Sangkhom district has two other worthwhile stops nearby: Phu Pha Dak, another Mekong-facing viewpoint, and Wat Pha Tak Suea, a cliffside temple with its own river outlook — both make sense to pair with an early start at Phu Huai I San.
