Phu Pha Thoep National Park

Phu Pha Thoep National Park protects a cluster of wind- and rain-sculpted sandstone pillars on the Mekong River bluffs south of Mukdahan — mushroom-shaped rock formations that give the park its name (roughly “stone slab mountain”). It was originally gazetted as Mukdahan National Park and covers a modest 48.5 square kilometres, about 17km south of Mukdahan city, making it an easy half-day trip rather than a full expedition.

The signature Hin Thoep rock group sits along a short, mostly flat trail — dozens of narrow-stemmed sandstone caps, some wider than a car, balanced on eroded bases after millions of years of weathering. A separate trail leads to Fa Mue Daeng Cave (“Red Hand Cave”), where ten red ochre hand stencils are pressed into the rock wall, dated by archaeologists to roughly 3,000-5,000 years old — one of the few prehistoric rock-art sites in this part of Isaan you can walk up to unsupervised. From the Lan Mutchalin Plateau near the visitor centre, the ground opens into wildflower meadows each October and November, with views back toward the Mekong and Laos on the far bank.

Insider Tip: Combine the Hin Thoep trail with the short walk to Fa Mue Daeng Cave in one visit — they share the same trailhead area, and visitors who skip the cave miss the park’s oldest feature entirely.

Watch out: The mushroom rocks look climbable but the sandstone is soft and crumbles at the edges. Park signage asks visitors to stay on the marked paths, both for erosion control and because a fall from the taller formations is a real risk.

Shade is limited across the exposed rock plateau, so the cooler months (November-February) make for the most comfortable hiking; the sandstone radiates serious heat by midday in the hot season. The rainy months (June-October) green up the surrounding forest and feed the park’s minor waterfall, Phu Tham Phra, though the exposed rock trails can turn slick. Entry costs 100 THB for foreign adults (50 THB for children) and 20 THB for Thai adults (10 THB for children), payable at the park office, daily 07:30-17:30.

The park sits inside Mukdahan province alongside its sister park, Phu Sa Dok Bua National Park, about an hour’s drive further south — the two are often combined into one day with a rental car. Closer to town, Ho Kaeo Mukdahan tower gives a preview of the same Mekong-valley views from ground level.
