Pratu Pha Special Warfare Training Camp

Pratu Pha Special Warfare Training Camp is an active Royal Thai Army base in Mae Mo district — home to the 3rd Army Region’s Special Warfare Company 3 — that also runs public adventure-tourism programs on its own grounds. It’s not a static military museum: soldiers here train recruits year-round, and visitors join a version of that training rather than watching from behind a rope line.
Programs cover conservation-focused jungle trekking, wilderness survival instruction, simulated cliff climbing, and tower jumping, run by camp instructors who use the same courses for military recruits. Groups can also arrange overnight camping on-site. A guided walk through the adjacent Pra Thu Pha archaeological site — the 3,000-year-old hematite rock paintings on the cliff face next to the camp — is typically bundled into a camp visit, led by camp personnel rather than a separate site guide.
On the surrounding cliffs, camp soldiers began developing Doi Pha Kan, a climbing area reported at the time as aiming to become one of the largest rock-climbing developments in Thailand, with plans for routes running the length of the mountain face. Progress has come in phases since; ask when you book whether the section you want is currently open, since access sits alongside active military use of the same terrain.
Insider Tip: Book through the camp office rather than turning up — as a working military facility it runs public programs around its own training schedule, and staff will tell you by phone which activities (trekking, climbing, camping) are running on your preferred date.
Watch out: This is still a functioning army base. Expect ID checks, restricted areas, and photography limits in parts of the compound — dress modestly and follow instructor guidance throughout.
Combine the visit with Pratu Pha’s shrine, the roadside warrior-spirit shrine a short drive away on the same Lampang-Ngao road (Highway 1), if you want the fuller Pratu Pha story beyond the camp’s adventure programs.
