Tham Pha Thai National Park

Tham Pha Thai National Park protects a limestone cave system in Lampang’s Ngao district, about 30-45 minutes north of the city. Entry is free and the park is open daily 06:00-18:00, but the cave itself is only manageable with a local guide — there’s no fixed lighting inside, and rangers or villagers lead visitors through with hand-carried lamps.

The cave is the reason to come: guided routes cover roughly the first 400-500 metres of a system that runs considerably deeper, past stalactite curtains and column formations built up over a very long time. Guides point out named formations and, on a good day, small pools inside the chamber. Above ground, the park has short forest trails through mixed deciduous woodland where hornbill calls are common in the early morning, plus a viewpoint that looks out over the surrounding Ngao valley — worth the short climb if you’re not purely here for the cave.

Insider Tip: Go before 10 AM. Cave tours run more smoothly with fewer groups queuing at the entrance, and the outdoor viewpoint is more comfortable before the midday heat sets in.

Watch out: There’s no set guide fee — it operates on tips and donations — so bring small cash. Don’t attempt the cave without a guide; the passages are unmarked and it’s easy to lose your bearings past the first chamber.

The park sees a fraction of the visitors that Chiang Mai’s cave sites get, which is the appeal if you want somewhere quiet — but it also means facilities are basic: no restaurant, limited signage in English, and mobile signal drops inside the cave. Pack water and snacks before you arrive.
