Sala Dusita is a small wooden sunrise pavilion in the Nong Mae Na section of Thung Salaeng Luang National Park, on the Phetchabun side of the park in Khao Kho district. It looks out over forested ridgelines that fill with a sea of mist on cool, clear mornings — a mountain-and-forest view, not the open grassland savanna the park is separately known for at Thung Nang Phaya and Thung Non Son elsewhere within its boundaries.

The sala itself is modest: a simple raised platform with a roof, built out toward open ground so the view opens up in front of it rather than through trees. Arrive in the dark and you wait with a small crowd of photographers and early risers as the sky lightens, the mist below shifting and thinning as the sun clears the ridgeline. On a good cool-season morning the valley disappears entirely under white cloud, with only the tallest ridges breaking the surface — the effect that draws people up here well before dawn. The air carries the cold, clean smell of pine and wet grass, and birdsong picks up as the light strengthens.

Getting there requires some planning. The viewpoint sits about 4 km — roughly 20 minutes — from the Nong Mae Na ranger station, along a road rough enough that most visitors go up by 4WD pickup, either their own or the park’s tourist shuttle, rather than a standard sedan. Watch out: there’s no lighting on the access road or at the sala itself, so a flashlight or phone torch is essential if you’re walking any part of it before sunrise.

Insider Tip: Check in at the Nong Mae Na ranger station the evening before if you’re staying nearby — rangers can tell you the morning’s shuttle schedule and whether mist is likely, since a clear but windy night sometimes burns it off before dawn.

Key Facts:
  • Location: Nong Mae Na, Khao Kho district, Phetchabun side of Thung Salaeng Luang National Park
  • Access: ~4 km / 20 min from Nong Mae Na ranger station; 4WD or park shuttle recommended
  • Entry: Standard national park ticket, ~500 THB foreign adult / 40 THB Thai adult
  • Best season: November-February for cool, clear mist mornings
  • Bring: Warm layers, flashlight, and time to spare before sunrise

Pair the sunrise with a stop at Khao Kho National Park or the wider Khao Kho viewpoint circuit later in the morning — most overnight visitors base themselves in Khao Kho town and treat Sala Dusita as the pre-dawn leg of a longer day exploring Phetchabun’s highlands.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the view from Sala Dusita actually look like?
A small wooden sala perched over open ground, looking out across forested ridgelines and mountains that fill with sea-of-mist on cool mornings. It's a forest-and-mist viewpoint, not the grassland savanna Thung Salaeng Luang is separately known for elsewhere in the park.
How do you get to Sala Dusita?
It's about 4 km (roughly 20 minutes) from the Nong Mae Na ranger station on the Phetchabun side of Thung Salaeng Luang National Park. The road in is rough enough that a 4WD pickup or the park's own tourist shuttle is the usual way up rather than a standard car.
Is there an entry fee?
The viewpoint sits inside Thung Salaeng Luang National Park, so the park's standard ticket applies — around 500 THB for foreign adults and 40 THB for Thai adults (300/20 THB for children), covering the whole park for the day.
When's the best time to see the sea of mist?
Cool season, November to February, when clear nights and cold mornings produce the thickest mist. Arrive well before sunrise — you need time to reach the viewpoint from the ranger station and claim a spot on the sala.
Do I need warm clothing?
Yes. Khao Kho's elevation means pre-dawn temperatures can drop into single digits Celsius in the cool season — bring a jacket even if the daytime forecast looks mild.
