Phu Tabberk
ภูทับเบิก
Phu Thap Boek rises to roughly 1,768 metres in Phetchabun’s Lom Kao district, making it one of the highest points tourists reach in this part of Thailand — and genuinely cold at the top, with cool-season nights dropping close to freezing. There’s no formal entrance fee for the viewpoint itself, though camping and homestays at the summit charge separately.
Getting up is the first challenge: the summit road climbs in steep switchbacks, tight enough that most visitors without their own 4WD hire a local pickup-truck taxi from the base rather than push a rental sedan up in the wet. Once you’re up top, the terrain splits into two very different draws that don’t overlap in timing. The green cabbage terraces that wrap the slopes are planted roughly late May through September, during the rainy season. The sea-of-mist mornings that make this a sunrise-photography spot happen in cool season, November to February — the coldest, driest months. Visitors expecting both on the same trip are usually disappointed; pick your season for what you actually want to see.
A camping ground sits at the summit, with tent pitches available for a small fee and rental tents with bedding for those who didn’t bring their own gear. A handful of cliffside resorts and homestays line the ridge as well, some built specifically for the mist view out the window.
Insider Tip: Pack real warm layers, not a light jacket — cool-season nights here are colder than almost anywhere else in lowland Thailand, and campers regularly underestimate it.
Watch out: Don’t confuse this with Phu Hin Rong Kla National Park or Khao Kho — both are separate mountain destinations elsewhere in this part of the country, with their own histories and attractions, and mixing them up leads to wasted driving time.
Buses run from Bangkok to Lom Sak or Lom Kao, with local songthaews or pickup taxis covering the final climb. Reserve summit accommodation ahead during cool-season weekends, when demand for mist-view rooms peaks.
