Si Nan National Park

Si Nan National Park covers montane forest and limestone cliffs in Na Noi district, about an hour’s drive south of Nan town. Entry costs 100 THB for foreign adults and 50 THB for foreign children (20/10 THB for Thai nationals). Most visitors come for one specific spot: Doi Samer Dao, a grassy ridge-top viewpoint whose name roughly translates to “peak aligned with the stars.”

Doi Samer Dao earns that name at night — with no nearby towns to wash out the sky, it’s one of the more reliable stargazing spots in Nan province. By day it’s a sea-of-mist viewpoint: arrive before 7 AM in the cool season and the valleys below fill with cloud that burns off within an hour or two. Camping is allowed here from roughly October to February; a rental two-person tent runs 300-400 THB, and there’s a small extra fee to use the campground itself. Outside the camping window the ridge is still open to day visitors, just without overnight facilities.

Insider Tip: Rent a tent on arrival rather than hauling one from Nan town — the campground has enough sets that walk-ins rarely get turned away outside long weekends, and it saves carrying gear up the ridge road.

Watch out: The access road climbs steeply and can turn slick in rain outside the cool season. A rented car is manageable in dry conditions, but check with the park office (0 5470 1106) before driving up during the June-September wet months.

Beyond Doi Samer Dao, the park’s forest is genuinely quiet — visitor numbers stay low compared to Nan’s better-known Doi Phu Kha National Park further north. Pair a visit with Sao Din Na Noi, the eroded badlands formation in the same district, for a two-stop day out from Nan. Bring water, snacks, and a jacket for the ridge — even in the hot season, dawn temperatures at altitude drop noticeably below what you’ll feel in Nan town.
