Si Suriyothai Park

Si Suriyothai Park is the garden surrounding Phra Chedi Sisuriyothai at Wat Suan Luang Sopsawan, on the west side of Ayutthaya’s historic island. It’s free to enter, open daily 09:00 to 17:00 — and it isn’t the much larger Somdet Phra Suriyothai Monument 4 km away at Thung Makham Yong, a common mix-up given the shared name.

The park itself covers roughly 5 rai around the memorial chedi that marks Queen Sisuriyothai’s traditional cremation site — she died in 1548 defending her husband, King Maha Chakkraphat, in battle against a Burmese invasion. Rather than repeat that history here (the chedi page next door covers it in full), the park adds a practical layer around the monument: the Somdet Phra Si Suriyothai pavilion, a small lake, and a mound holding ancient marble boundary stones that predate the memorial itself.

Open lawns and shade trees make this a quieter stop than the ticketed ruins elsewhere in Ayutthaya — more of a short breather than a full sightseeing agenda. Locals use it for a riverside walk as often as visitors come for the history, and there’s rarely a crowd even when the main temple complexes get busy. The white, bell-shaped chedi is visible from most of the lawn, so even a bench some distance away still gives a clear view of the monument the park is built around.

The lake at the centre of the grounds is small and ornamental rather than a boating spot — it reflects the chedi and the surrounding trees, and is best appreciated from the pavilion rather than up close underfoot.

Insider Tip: Visit right after the chedi itself — it’s a two-minute walk, and since both sit on the same grounds there’s no reason to plan them as separate trips.

Shade is limited around the open lawn sections, so early morning or late afternoon beats the midday heat. It’s reachable by tuk-tuk, bicycle, or car from central Ayutthaya in under 10 minutes, and pairs naturally with the nearby Wat Phra Si Sanphet ruins on the same loop.
