Talat Tha Chang

Talat Tha Chang is a century-old market on the west bank of the Tha Chin River in Doem Bang Nang Buat, the northernmost district of Suphan Buri province. It began as a river-trade landing where boats moored to sell goods to the surrounding villages — locals sometimes still call it a “floating market” out of that history — but today it operates as a land-based riverside market, with the daily trading window starting well before dawn, roughly 3:00 to 8:00am.

The morning market is a working local market rather than a tourist production: fresh produce, dried goods, seasonal fruit, river fish, and old-style Thai sweets sold from stalls along the riverside street, mostly to residents doing their daily shopping. A 1958 fire tore through the original wooden shophouse row, destroying several hundred buildings — what stands today was rebuilt after that, though trade has continued on this stretch of riverbank for well over a century.

Once a month, the market shows a different side. On the first Saturday, “Tha Chang Doen Ploen” (Tha Chang Walking Street) takes over the same stretch from around 4pm to 9pm, with food vendors, local snacks, and a slower browsing pace aimed more at visitors than the pre-dawn crowd. It’s the more realistic option for anyone not willing to arrive before sunrise.

Insider Tip: Skip the daily 3am market unless you’re already up — the monthly Saturday evening walking street is the far more visitor-friendly version of Talat Tha Chang, with the same riverside setting and none of the pre-dawn wake-up.

Doem Bang Nang Buat sits well north of Suphan Buri’s better-known sights, so this is a market for travellers already in the district rather than a detour from the provincial capital. Pair it with Wat Doem Bang, the temple the district takes its name from, or make the longer drive south to Sam Chuk Old Market, Suphan Buri’s most visited century-old riverside market, for a comparison between the two.
