Thai Textile Tin Chok Museum Ratchaburi

At Wat Khaetrai in Khu Bua, a small heritage centre keeps the Tai Yuan community’s tin chok weaving alive: more than 100 pieces of hand-woven brocade cloth, some antique, some recent reproductions of patterns that have been passed down for generations. Entry is free and it opens daily 08:00-17:00, but call ahead before you drive out so a weaver is there.

Tin chok (dtin jok) is a supplementary-weft technique used to weave the tin (the decorated hem panel) of a Thai sarong. Khu Bua’s Tai Yuan people, descendants of weavers who settled here after being moved south from the Chiang Saen area generations ago, kept the craft going as a household skill long after it faded elsewhere. The centre was set up in 1991 by Dr. Udom Samphon through the local school’s alumni association, specifically to stop the pattern knowledge dying out as the older weavers aged.

The collection documents nine core traditional patterns and their variations, including one called Kaen Kratai, named after an ornamental plant grown here to mark a royal visit. When a weaver is on site, you can watch the process on a traditional floor loom, threading hundreds of individual supplementary weft strands by hand to build up a geometric motif row by row, a process that can take weeks for a single panel. It’s slow, repetitive work to watch, but the patterns only make sense once you see how each one is built thread by thread.

Insider Tip: Ring ahead rather than just turning up. It opens daily 08:00-17:00, but this is a working community centre, not a staffed museum, and a weaver demonstrating the loom is the whole reason to visit. An empty room with display cases is a much thinner experience.

Because it’s a school-linked community project rather than a purpose-built museum, don’t expect climate-controlled galleries or English signage throughout. Most explanation comes from whoever’s on site rather than wall text. That’s also what makes it worth the detour: you’re seeing a living craft practice, not a static exhibit.
