Tham Khangkhao

Tham Khangkhao sits in the limestone karst of Phu Pha Man district, in the far west of Khon Kaen province — not the cave of the same name in other provinces, and not, as an earlier version of this page claimed, in Ubon Ratchathani. The draw here isn’t the cave interior so much as what happens just outside it every evening: a colony of wrinkle-lipped free-tailed bats numbering in the millions streams out of the entrance in a long, twisting column that can take 30-45 minutes to clear.

The exodus starts close to 18:00, timed to dusk rather than the clock, so arriving between 17:00 and 17:30 gives you time to find a spot with a clear view of the cave mouth before the light fades. Bats leave in a continuous dark ribbon that shifts direction as it rises, wheeling over the surrounding hills before scattering to feed. It’s one of the more reliable wildlife spectacles in this part of Isan, and it costs nothing to watch.

Inside, the cave is a natural limestone passage rather than a developed show-cave — there’s no lighting rig or walkway, so a flashlight or headlamp is essential if you want to go beyond the entrance chamber. The rock is often damp and can be slippery, and low sections mean some ducking is required. Local vendors sell drinks and snacks near the entrance in the late afternoon as visitors gather for the exodus, but don’t expect facilities beyond that.

Insider Tip: Bat numbers and exact emergence time vary with the season and weather — a calm, dry evening late in the dry season tends to draw the largest and most photogenic column. If rain is likely, the bats may hold off or leave later than usual.

Watch out: There’s no barrier between the viewing area and the cave mouth, and the ground underfoot is uneven rock and dirt. Bring a torch for the walk back to your car once the light’s gone — there’s no site lighting.

Getting here means your own car or a rental, as Tham Khangkhao isn’t on a public transport route. It pairs naturally with a stop at Phu Pha Man National Park, a few kilometres away, or with the karst formations at Tham Pu Lup if you want to see more of the district’s cave systems in one trip. Both sit within the same corner of Khon Kaen province, making a single-day loop straightforward with your own transport.
