Phu Pha Man National Park protects a stretch of limestone cliffs 200–1,000 metres high in Chum Phae district, Khon Kaen — about 120 km from Khon Kaen city (82 km to Chum Phae town, then a further 40 km along the Maliwan road). Entry costs 20 THB for a Thai adult (10 THB for a child) and 100 THB for a foreign adult (50 THB for a child), plus a vehicle fee at the gate. The park covers roughly 218,750 rai across five ranger stations, making it one of the larger protected areas in this part of Isan.

Five show caves are the park’s main draw: the Bat Cave (home to a resident bat colony you’ll smell before you see), Pha Phuang Cave, Phu Ta Lho Cave, Lay Thang Cave, and Ket Kaew Cave. Several chambers hold prehistoric rock paintings — human figures, animals, and geometric patterns pecked or painted onto the stone by people who lived in this landscape long before recorded Thai history. None of the caves are electrically lit, so what you bring in terms of lighting determines what you actually see; a strong handheld torch angled low across a painted wall reveals detail that gets washed out by a phone flashlight held straight on.

Three waterfalls — Tad Fa, Tad Yai, and Plaen Thong — cut through the sandstone elsewhere in the park, at their fullest in the rainy season (June–October) and reduced to shallow pools by the hot season. Nature trails link the caves, viewpoints, and waterfalls through dense deciduous forest, with birdsong a near-constant soundtrack even where the birds themselves stay hidden in the canopy.

Insider Tip: Visit the Bat Cave close to dusk if you want to see the colony leave for its nightly feeding flight — arriving mid-afternoon means a quiet cave and no bats in sight.

Watch out: Cave floors and approach trails get slick fast once rain starts, and several caves involve scrambling over uneven rock rather than a paved walkway — trainers with real grip beat sandals here.

Key Facts:
  • Location: Chum Phae district, Khon Kaen (~120 km from Khon Kaen city)
  • Entry fee: 20 THB Thai adult / 100 THB foreign adult (children half)
  • Hours: Daily 08:00–16:30
  • Caves: 5 show caves incl. Bat Cave and Pha Phuang Cave; prehistoric rock paintings
  • Waterfalls: Tad Fa, Tad Yai, Plaen Thong

Cool season (November–February) gives the clearest skies for photographing the cliffs and the most comfortable hiking temperatures. Bring water, a flashlight, and sturdy shoes; there’s no meaningful shade around the exposed viewpoints. The park runs six on-site accommodation options bookable through the national parks reservation system, plus camping, if you want to base here rather than day-trip from Khon Kaen.
