Bang Kobua Community Tourism

Bang Kobua is a community-run stretch of Bang Krachao, the Chao Phraya river bend directly across from Bangkok that locals call the city’s “green lung.” Residents in Bang Ko Bua subdistrict dug out roughly a kilometre of the old Khlong Phae canal — once the community’s transport route to Khlong Toei pier — to reopen it as a paddling route, and the tourism club that runs it now holds a 5-star rating in the Tourism Authority of Thailand’s 2023 STAR Award program plus a Kinnaree Award for low-carbon, sustainable tourism.

The main activity is kayaking or paddling Khlong Phae itself, gliding under a canopy of nipa palms whose overhanging fronds close into green tunnels above the water in places — a distinctly different view of Bangkok’s edge than the skyline eight kilometres upriver. A round trip runs about a kilometre and 45 minutes, with a hat and life jacket supplied, typically around 100 THB per person. Beyond the water, the club runs walks through the community itself and serves food at its own stalls, cooked by residents rather than a catering outfit brought in for tourists.

What sets Bang Kobua apart from a generic “village visit” listing is that the canal-clearing and guiding operation is entirely community-organised — the tourism club, not a tour company, decides the routes, runs the boats, and keeps the income local. That’s also the basis for the STAR and Kinnaree recognition: judges scored it on genuine environmental upkeep of the canal and equitable distribution of tourism income within the community, not just visitor numbers.

Insider Tip: Go on a weekday morning if you want the canal to yourself — weekends bring day-trippers from Bangkok by bicycle and the narrow waterway gets busy with paddlers passing each other.

Watch out: This is still a working residential community, not a staged attraction — public transport doesn’t reach Bang Ko Bua directly, so plan the ferry-plus-bicycle or ferry-plus-taxi route in advance, and expect limited English.
