A seated statue of Luang Phor Thuad roughly 11-12 metres tall dominates Wat Huai Mongkhon, visible from well outside the temple grounds on the edge of Hua Hin. It’s a modern complex rather than a historic one, built specifically around the statue, and entry is free, daily from 05:00 to 21:00.
Luang Phor Thuad was a 17th-century monk credited with numerous miracles and still widely venerated across Thailand — his image appears on some of the country’s most sought-after amulets. Steps lead up to a platform at the statue’s base, where you get a close look at the robes and facial detailing along with views back over the surrounding Prachuap Khiri Khan countryside. Smaller prayer halls and shrines sit around the main statue, and it’s normal to see visitors circling the base clockwise as a mark of respect. Morning and evening chanting draws a modest crowd of regular devotees rather than tour groups, particularly around the temple’s opening and closing hours.
Insider Tip: Visit around sunset, in the hour or so before the 21:00 close — the crowds that gather for daytime photos have mostly left, and the statue catches the evening light well from the base platform.
Watch out: There’s minimal shade on the open steps and platform around the statue, and the climb is exposed to direct sun for most of the day. Bring water and sun protection if visiting outside the early morning or late afternoon.
The temple is about 15 minutes from central Hua Hin by car or motorbike taxi, with clear signage along the route. There’s no on-site fee, but a small donation box near the entrance supports the temple’s upkeep. Cover shoulders and knees before approaching the statue platform.
