Wat Klang Kret

Wat Klang Kret is a Buddhist temple on the mainland bank of the Lat Kret River in Pak Kret, Nonthaburi — not to be confused with the temples on Koh Kret island itself, directly across the water. This late-Ayutthaya-period temple sits in Bang Talat subdistrict, and its pier is one of the main crossing points for visitors heading over to the island. The name “Klang Kret” — the middle of Kret — reflects its position along the channel that separates the mainland from Koh Kret.

The temple complex has traditional wooden carvings and Thai temple architecture reflecting the Mon cultural presence in this stretch of the Chao Phraya basin. The main prayer hall holds the principal Buddha image, surrounded by smaller statues and offerings from local devotees. Monks go about their daily routines, and incense smoke drifts through the courtyard, mixing with the sound of temple bells and chanting. Koh Kret’s well-known leaning chedi, Phra Chedi Mu Tao, is not here — it belongs to Wat Poramaiyikawas on the island, a short ferry ride away, a distinction worth knowing before you go looking for it on the wrong bank.

The waterside setting sets the pace: longtail boats cross regularly between here and Koh Kret, and the temple grounds stay quiet even when the ferry traffic picks up on weekends. Elderly residents come to make merit and talk with neighbours in the shade, and the atmosphere leans local rather than touristy — most visitors here are either locals or people passing through en route to the island.

Insider Tip: Use Wat Klang Kret’s pier as your crossing point if the main Wat Sanam Nuea pier is crowded on a weekend — it’s a five-minute walk further along the bank but usually has a shorter queue for the ferry.

Visit early morning or late afternoon for the coolest temperatures and a chance to see monks’ prayer sessions. Dress modestly (covered shoulders and knees), remove your shoes before entering buildings, and keep quiet during prayer times. The temple makes a natural bookend to a day on Koh Kret rather than a standalone destination.
